An IRONMAN is a long distance triathlon event combining the world's three most popular sports disciplines. Starting with 3.8km of swimming, the athletes have to bike for 180km and run a marathon of 42.195km before crossing the finishline.
IRONMAN started in 1978 in Hawaii when athletes discussed who was the fittest athlete - the swimmer, the biker or the runner. The decision was easy: The first one finishing a combination of these three should be called an Ironman.
Today, there are 20 IRONMAN labelled events world wide, each of them giving qualifying spots for the IRONMAN World Championship taking place in October - in Hawaii.
After a race called TriMania covering the Ironman distance with 124 participants in 1998, TRIANGLE obtained the licence to organise an official IRONMAN in Austria. The IRONMAN Austria is held in Klagenfurt and has become the fastest growing IRONMAN worldwide. In its 8th edition the race had 2200 participants - the biggest IRONMAN race in 2006!

The IRONMAN France was first organised in France in 2002. After three editions in Gérardmer, the IRONMAN France came to Nice - the historical heart of European Triathlon.
With the swim in the clear waters of the Mediterranean, the bike ride through the French alps and the run along the world famous Promenade des Anglais, the IRONMAN France - Nice is surely one of the most beautiful races worldwide.

The Spec-Savers IRONMAN South Africa enjoys growing numbers ever since; South Africa is a country delighted with endurance sports and Nelson Mandela Bay is the perfect host city for this race with African flair.
